Luxury Watch Buying Guide

How to choose a pre-owned luxury watch: budget, style, sizing, movements, condition, authenticity, safe payment and what to do when it arrives.

1. Set a realistic budget

Decide on a total budget before you start browsing, and include anything you may want later, such as a strap change or routine servicing. A mechanical watch typically benefits from a service every five to ten years depending on the brand and how it is worn.

Pre-owned watches let you buy a well-kept example below the cost of a new one, but prices for sought-after references can still be close to, or above, retail. Compare several listings of the same reference rather than relying on a single price.

2. Choose the right style for how you live

Think about where the watch will be worn most often. Dress watches are thin, simple and sit under a shirt cuff. Dive and sports watches are robust and water resistant. Chronographs add a stopwatch function. A steel sports watch on a bracelet is often the most versatile single watch.

3. Get the size right

Case diameter is only part of the fit. Lug-to-lug length (the distance from the top to the bottom of the case) decides whether a watch overhangs your wrist. As a general guide, wrists under about 6.5 in (16.5 cm) suit cases of roughly 34–39 mm, and larger wrists suit roughly 39–42 mm or more.

Measure your wrist with a flexible tape or a strip of paper. Bracelet sizing can usually be adjusted by adding or removing links; ask us whether spare links are included with a specific watch.

4. Understand the movement

Automatic movements wind themselves as you wear the watch and usually run for about two to three days when set down. Manual-wind movements need winding by the crown, often daily. Quartz movements are battery-powered, very accurate and need little maintenance.

Mechanical watches naturally gain or lose a few seconds per day. Each manufacturer publishes its own accuracy tolerance, and a watch running within that tolerance is functioning normally.

5. Read the condition carefully

With a pre-owned watch, condition determines value. Look at the case and bracelet for scratches or polishing, the dial and hands for discoloration, the crystal for chips, and the bracelet for stretch. Ask whether the watch has been polished, because heavy polishing can soften the original case lines.

Every watch we list is graded under our published condition-grading standard, and the grade on the product page applies to that exact watch. Ask for extra photos or a video of any detail you want to see before buying.

6. Verify authenticity and paperwork

Buy from a seller that publishes a real business name, street address and phone number, and that stands behind authenticity in writing. Check that the reference and serial numbers are consistent with the model and production period, and that any box, papers or service records match the watch.

Missing box and papers do not make a watch fake, but they can affect price and resale value. A clear seller should state exactly what is included.

7. Check the seller before you pay
