Why rose gold looks the way it does

Pure gold is too soft for a watch case, so it is always alloyed. What you add determines the colour. Add silver and palladium and you get white gold; keep the balance neutral and you get yellow; increase the copper proportion and the alloy shifts pink. An 18k rose gold is still 75% gold — the remaining quarter simply skews toward copper. More copper means a deeper, redder tone; less means a subtler blush that sits closer to champagne.

That copper content has a practical benefit: it makes rose gold marginally harder than yellow gold of the same karat, so it resists everyday marks slightly better. Some historic rose gold alloys developed a warm patina over decades as the copper oxidised at the surface, which many collectors consider a feature rather than a fault.
